Prioritizing Mental Wellness for racialized Professionals

Written by Nathan Hall |

At Culture Check, we understand the unique challenges that racialized professionals face in our career journeys. From battling workplace discrimination to managing the pressures of everyday life, the toll on our mental well-being is undeniable. As we recognize Black Mental Health Week (March 4, 2024 – March 10, 2024), we are steadfast in our commitment to providing meaningful support to our communities.

Our partnership with Fruits from the Roots has led to the creation of the Mental Health for Success (MH4S) program—an initiative designed specifically for racialized professionals seeking culturally competent mental health care. Since its inception, the MH4S program has made significant strides in providing support to those who need it most.

Since our launch last year, we have facilitated over 178 FREE psychotherapy sessions, valued at approximately $28,000. These numbers speak volumes about the urgent need for tailored mental health support within the Black professional community.

Our data reveals compelling insights into the challenges faced by participants. A majority identify as female, shedding light on the unique struggles racialized women encounter in professional environments. But it also highlights the unfortunate reality that men are far less likely to seek this form of support. The top concerns—ranging from anxiety and depression to experiences of racial discrimination and burnout—underscore the multifaceted nature of our experiences.

But Culture Check's commitment extends beyond individual therapy sessions. We have also hosted community workshops covering topics such as Minority Stress Theory at Work, Mindfulness and Having Difficult Conversation. These gatherings provide essential spaces for racalized professionals to connect, share experiences, and find strength in solidarity.

What sets the MH4S program apart is our dedication to a culturally sensitive and anti-oppressive approach. By connecting participants with therapists who understand our unique challenges, we ensure that support is not only effective but also empowering.

Culture Check is deeply grateful for the opportunity to address the crucial need for mental health support within racialized communities. By partnering with FFTR and launching the MH4S program, we're not just providing a service—we're working towards normalizing therapy and breaking down barriers to mental wellness. Together, let's continue to foster spaces where everyone feels empowered to prioritize our mental health and thrive in our personal and professional lives.
